How to Choose a Rehabilitation Centre in Hyderabad: A Family Checklist

The short answer: Choose a centre that matches the patient's medical needs, not just the one closest to home. For someone recovering from a stroke, brain or spinal injury, or major surgery, look for doctor-led care, several hours of therapy a day from a team of different specialists, 24-hour nursing, and a clear plan for what happens if the patient's condition worsens. Visit in person, ask direct questions, and expect clear, written answers.

Key points

  • First make sure it is a medical rehabilitation centre. In Hyderabad the word "rehabilitation" is also used for de-addiction centres, which provide a completely different kind of care.
  • Match the level of care to the patient: inpatient care for those who still need medical supervision, outpatient care for those who are stable and can travel.
  • Ask how many hours of therapy the patient will actually receive each day, and from which specialists.
  • Ask what happens in a medical emergency, and whether the patient would need to be moved to another hospital.

When a hospital tells a family that their loved one is "stable and ready for rehabilitation", the next question comes quickly: where? Most families have never had to choose a rehabilitation centre before, and they usually have to decide within days, while still coping with the shock of the illness itself. This guide gives you a practical way to compare your options.

Step 1: Make Sure It Is the Right Kind of Rehabilitation

Search for "rehabilitation centre Hyderabad" and you will find very different places under the same name. Broadly, there are three kinds:

  • Medical and neurological rehabilitation centres, for recovery after stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, surgery or serious illness. These are the subject of this guide.
  • Physiotherapy clinics, which usually offer outpatient sessions of about an hour for musculoskeletal problems and milder conditions. The difference between neuro rehabilitation and physiotherapy matters a great deal for patients with neurological injuries.
  • De-addiction centres, which treat alcohol and drug dependence. This is a separate specialty with its own licensing, and it is not what a stroke or brain injury patient needs.

If a centre's website or phone staff are vague about which of these they are, ask directly.

Step 2: Decide Between Inpatient and Outpatient Care

The most important decision is the level of care, and it depends on the patient, not on convenience.

Inpatient rehabilitation suits patients who still need medical or nursing supervision, cannot yet move or eat safely without help, have complex medical conditions such as diabetes, heart or kidney problems alongside their neurological injury, or need several hours of therapy every day.

Outpatient rehabilitation suits patients who are medically stable, can travel safely, and have family support at home between sessions.

If you are unsure, our guide on when to shift a patient to a neuro rehabilitation centre lists the warning signs that inpatient care is needed.

Step 3: The Checklist

Use these questions to compare centres. A good centre will answer all of them clearly and without pressure.

Medical supervision

  • Is there a doctor on site at all times, including at night?
  • What happens if the patient's condition gets worse: can it be managed on site, or would they be transferred? How far away is the nearest ICU?
  • Can the centre manage the patient's other conditions, such as dialysis, diabetes or a tracheostomy?

The team

  • Which specialists will treat the patient: physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech and swallow therapist, doctor, nurse, dietitian?
  • Are the doctors named, with their qualifications and registration numbers available?
  • Who leads the care plan, and how often does the whole team review progress?

Therapy intensity

  • How many hours of therapy will the patient receive each day, and on how many days a week?
  • Is therapy one-to-one, or in groups?
  • Is there a written plan with measurable goals, and how often is it updated?

Nursing and daily care

  • What is the nurse-to-patient ratio, day and night?
  • How are pressure sores, falls and infections prevented?
  • Are meals planned by a dietitian around the patient's condition and swallowing ability?

Families

  • Can family members attend therapy sessions and learn how to help?
  • What are the visiting hours, and can an attendant stay with the patient?
  • How is the family prepared for the patient's return home?

Costs and insurance

  • What is included in the daily or package cost, and what is billed separately (medicines, investigations, specialist visits)?
  • Will you get a written estimate before admission?
  • Is the centre in your insurer's network for cashless treatment, or will you need to claim reimbursement? Our guide to health insurance and neuro rehabilitation in India explains what to ask your insurer.

Step 4: Visit Before You Decide

Photographs and websites only tell you so much. If you can, visit in person and notice:

  • Cleanliness and smell of wards and bathrooms.
  • Whether patients are active. In a good rehabilitation centre you should see patients in therapy, not just resting in bed all day.
  • Equipment in use, such as parallel bars, tilt tables and gym equipment, not stored away unused.
  • How staff speak to patients and families, and whether they answer your questions or avoid them.
  • Accessibility: lifts, ramps, accessible toilets and wheelchair access.

Red Flags

Be cautious if a centre:

  • promises a full recovery or gives a guaranteed timeline before assessing the patient;
  • cannot tell you how many hours of therapy the patient will receive;
  • will not name its doctors or their qualifications;
  • has no clear plan for medical emergencies;
  • pressures you to pay a large advance before an assessment;
  • is unclear about what the price includes.

Location Matters, But Less Than You Think

It is natural to prefer a centre close to home, and for outpatient care that makes sense. For inpatient rehabilitation, the quality and intensity of care matter far more than travel time, because the patient stays on site. A few extra kilometres is a small price for the right level of care during the weeks when recovery is fastest.
